Fun Ice Tunnels Experiment

Ice Tunnels

The Holiday Season is here! With some kids home from school a little longer this year, here is a fun winter-themed experiment to do with them over the break! In this experiment, they’ll learn about a scientific principle called freezing point depression and have fun playing with ice!

Salt lowers the freezing point of water. When you sprinkle salt on ice it dissolves in the surface film of water that is always present on ice. The ice underneath that is in contact with the salt-water solution melts more quickly as the freezing point drops. This creates little tunnels that become more visible when you add food coloring. Check out our Home Lab video and watch our Mad Scientists show you what to do!
